My friend Aliskye long ago asked me for a scroll in the style of Flemish miniature painter Simon Bening (1483–1561). Though it took me eight years (in which time we had two children and one new house), I'm very pleased that she has happily received it. It is the most detailed landscape I've done to date.

While working on it, I had plenty of time to meditate on the story. Visible here is the moment when Baroness Aliskye first spots her cottage by the sea as she returns via riverboat. The landscape is inspired both by Benning's landscapes as well as the SCA Barony of Lyondemere (Santa Monica Bay in Los Angeles County, California)

Size: 10"x6" (both "pages"). Tools used: Winsor Newton gouache, India Ink (I don't recall what kind of pen I used), Sumi Gold. Time spent: hours and hours...

I looked at both the close up and this one... what can I say but wow.

Lots of detail, lots of time (I figured that before I read your artist's comments)! Everything looks great in addition to looking "correct" for the period you want to emulate.

Thank you for the compliment (and taking the time to look at both deviations then leave a comment)
